Hawaii Attorneys Help Consumers and Keiki Learn About Economics and Financial Literacy! Thanks to the efforts of Perkin & Faria, LLLP and Bickerton Dang, LLLP, HCEE has received a donation of $107,169.52 that will be used to educate Hawaii’s school-aged keiki (K-12), educators from
the public, private, charter, and home schools, and the public learn more about finance and economics. The attorneys led a class action suit against several Hawaii Banks including Bank of Hawaii, Central Pacific Bank, and American Savings Bank. Nationally over the past several years, dozens of banks from across the country were forced to refund millions of dollars in illegal overdraft fee charges to consumers through a series of class action lawsuit settlements. These class action lawsuits accused multiple financial institutions of employing tactics designed to trigger and rack up overdraft fee charges to the tune of more than $20 million in the State of Hawaii alone. What was unique about this class action suit was the naming of several non-profits that will benefit from certain proceeds to help Hawaii’s consumers and keiki learn more about finance and economics. In settling the suit with American Savings Bank, HCEE was selected as one of several beneficiaries according to the terms of the settlement. In helping Hawaii’s consumers affected by excess overdraft fees, Brandee Faria, Managing Partner of Perkin and Faria, LLLP, encouraged all consumers to be vigilant, to question practices that may not seem acceptable, and to get more education in the areas of personal finance and economics. |
