Congratulations Kit Wong 2018 teacher of the year!
Kit Wong graduated with her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Scripps College, and is currently getting her Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Hawaii Pacific University. She is a teacher as well as the Dean of Social Studies and Mathematics at Maryknoll School, where she has been teaching for the past seven years.
Maryknoll holds a special place in Kit’s heart because it is her alma mater and where she was first introduced to the world of economics. Inspired by her former teachers, Kit understands the importance of rapport and a nurturing learning environment. She builds relationships with her students through the passion and enthusiasm she brings not only to the field of economics, but also to the craft of teaching. Though only at the beginning of her teaching career, Kit has already inspired a number of students to study economics in college.
Kit’s teaching methodology and curriculum have produced tangible results. One of her student teams finished first in the Fall 2016 Hawaii Stock Market Simulation. Her students have also consistently performed well at the Hawaii Economics Challenge every year since she became Maryknoll’s sole Economics, AP Economics, and Personal Finance teacher four years ago. In addition, her Life-Smarts team—a consumer education competition that tests student competence in life skills such as personal finance—has earned a berth at the state finals every year since they started competing three years ago. Kit has also guided her AP students to great success. In the past three years, her students have averaged 100% passing rate with an average score of 4.4 on their AP Microeconomics exam and 98.6% passing rate with an average score of 4.6 on their AP Macroeconomics exam.
In her spare time, Kit enjoys trying new restaurants and reading on her Kindle. Her favorite book genres are fantasy and historical fiction.
