ECONOMICS TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARD
For Excellence in Economic Education
Kapolei Middle School has a distinguished economic literacy advocate in Shirley Yamauchi, this year’s 2016 Economics Teacher of the Year award recipient.
After graduating with her Bachelor of Arts degree in Japanese from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, she returned to school and graduated with her Post Baccalaureate Certification in Secondary Education, with a focus in Japanese. She was hired as a teacher at Kapolei Middle School, in August of 2000. She was placed as a grade eight mathematics teacher during her first year.
Shirley was a grade six language arts teacher, from 2001-2015. She has demonstrated outstanding talents in the classroom, with numerous award winning students for over a decade. Her students have placed at the local, county, national, and international levels, in various writing and art contests. As a classroom teacher, Shirley is supportive and creative. Her interpersonal skills are exceptional, even serving as a Japanese translator for ELL students who recently transferred from Japan to the school’s campus.
Last year, Shirley became a grade seven elective wheel teacher. As is her norm, she went above and beyond to make sure her students are learning, having fun, and achieving mastery. Her students were especially excited about their daily online stock market challenge assignment in the spring semester of 2016. She is continuing to guide her students through the Stock Market Challenge this year with a new group of students who are equally excited and were recently featured on KFVE. She has also planned and implemented an outreach program for all military students on campus and developed positive relationships with parents. Shirley does a remarkable job of motivating students.
Shirley recently participated in the 2016 National Educator Association’s Representative Assembly, held in Washington DC to represent teachers in Hawaii in the Leeward District. She regularly implements leadership strategies in her position as the school’s union representative, for the Hawaii State Teachers Association. When professional development opportunities are presented to Shirley, she openly receives the information and utilizes them in her leadership role on and off campus, as a state level Board of Director.
Outside of school, Shirley enjoys spending time with her husband, attending concerts, traveling, and extreme couponing. Together, they have an amazing infant son, who is eighteen months old.
