Congratulations Elizabeth Ben 2014 Teacher of the Year!
Henry J. Kaiser High School has a financial literacy and economic education champion in teacher Elizabeth Ben. Elizabeth has been an advocate for improving economic and financial literacy education in the classroom. In fact, whenever there was an HCEE Workshop, she would always the first one to sign up.
Later this year, Elizabeth will also be serving as an instructor for the HCEE. The HCEE, in partnership with the DCCA, will be offering a workshop; Integrating Stock Market and Economic Concepts in the Classroom in September and Elizabeth will be the instructor for the course.
Elizabeth is characterized as one to seize each opportunity presented to her to advance her understanding of economics as well as teaching skills. This has not only helped improve her economic and financial literacy knowledge, but also aided in the providing stronger educational curriculum for her students. Elizabeth’s road to becoming a teacher began when a Teacher’s Assistant encouraged her to teach a lab class for Information and Computer Science. It was there that Elizabeth fell in love with teaching and found her passion.
After graduating with her Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Human Resources, she returned to school and graduated with her Post Bachelorette in Secondary Education. She eventually was hired as a teacher at Kaiser High School where she has been the past four years. Elizabeth has taught Freshman Leadership, Business Core, Accounting, Office Administration, Entrepreneurship, Digital Media, and Animation. She enjoys the interaction with the students as well as watching them grow although she is saddened to watch them grow taller than she.
Outside of school, Elizabeth enjoys spending time with her husband whom she was been with for 16 years. Together, they have 3 kids: a daughter, age 5, and 2 sons, ages 3½ and 7 months. When she does find time alone, she reads the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind.
